Program Note:
Wild Lanterns is a celebration of light and motion, weaving together inspirations from global traditions. Drawing especially from the Chinese Lantern Festival, the breathtaking lantern celebrations I witnessed in Thailand, and the fire rituals of Indigenous cultures, the piece honors the shared human impulse to gather, to illuminate the night, and to celebrate life through ritual.
Rather than focusing on a single tradition, Wild Lanterns brings together the spirit of diverse cultures into one vibrant procession. Melodies flicker and rhythms surge like lanterns carried on wild winds, glowing with life, energy, and joy. In this music, light is not something still or delicate. It is alive, restless, and exuberant, sparking a communal celebration that transcends borders and time.
