Hacha (2025)

Commissioned by the Texas New Music Ensemble, Hacha takes its name from the Spanish word for “axe,” inspired by Mesoamerican ritual sculptures carved in many forms. The piece grew out of an exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where I saw an incense burner lid showing a ballplayer clutching a heavy game ball, dressed in a birdlike costume that might have been ritual attire.​
